Students at Coloma can justifiably claim to be floating on cloud nine following their outstanding GCSE examination results this year. A staggering 44% of grades were at grade 7 or higher, equivalent to an A or A* last year, with 23% of the grades being either an 8 or a 9. The science department led the way with 20% of Chemistry grades awarded being a 9, the highest grade possible, and Biology and Physics were hot on its heels. Standards were similar in subjects that have not yet been reformed, with 22% of students achieving an A* in Business Studies.
Of the individual successes, Pearl Young should certainly be blowing her own trumpet. Among her many extracurricular activities, Pearl plays the trumpet in the school jazz band and she has now achieved 10 of the top grade 9s in the new GCSEs. Sorcha Lydon and Joanna Vieira O’Neill also both achieved 8 grade 9s each, with a total of 25 grades at 7 or higher between them.
Overall, the school was absolutely delighted with the students’ results. Headteacher Jackie Johnson said, ‘It is fantastic to see that the hard work put in by our students and all of our staff has deservedly translated into these excellent results. I am also pleased that the students have achieved these results across a wide range of subjects while still continuing to participate in extra-curricular activities that include music, sport and debating’.
Coloma is proud of the broad range of subjects which students are able to study. Subjects taken this year, and being studied by the up-coming year groups, included Art, Drama and Music which are under threat in many schools. Over 90% of the students were entered for the EBacc combination of subjects which includes a Modern Foreign Language, a Humanity, either History or Geography, as well as Maths, English and Science. The school does not select on ability so maintaining both the breadth of study and the standard of results, where over 91% of all grades are either 4+ or C+, is an outstanding achievement.
The GCSE successes follow on from the excellent results achieved by students in the sixth form last week. Further details about Coloma Sixth Form can be obtained by contacting Mrs Ingram, the KS5 coordinator. JIngram@coloma.croydon.sch.uk
