General Aims and Objectives

  • To investigate the earth and its peoples
  • To study the features of the earth e.g. how mountains, rivers and seas are formed
  • To develop an awareness of their role locally, nationally and globally
  • To develop key geographical concepts and skills especially, map skills, Geographical Information Systems (GIS),  data collection, ICT, problem solving, thinking skills, information processing, reasoning, enquiry, creative thinking and evaluation.
  • To stimulate pupils interest in their own environment and in the wider world.
  • To develop an understanding of the relationship between people and the environment.
  • To voice an awareness of environmental issues and come up with probable solutions.
  • To encourage and develop a sense of responsibility and concern for the earth’s resources.
  • To develop an appreciation of other peoples’ beliefs, values and attitudes.

 

Availability of subject

At Key Stage 3 all students have two lessons of Geography a week.

At Key Stage 4 Geography is an option and students have three lessons a week.

An atlas

Appropriate clothing and footwear for fieldtrips

 

Trips or fieldwork

Key Stage 3 – most fieldwork is carried out in the school grounds.

Key Stage 4 – trip to the Natural History Museum in year 10 (planned).  Whole day fieldwork at the end of year 10 for Controlled Assessment.

Key Stage 5 and IB – residential trip to the Isle of Wight.

Year 9 – Tectonics, 80:20, Ecosystems 
4 GSCE students will follow the AQA A specification from September 2009. 
5 and IB GCE students follow the AQA specification
Year 12 – Rivers, Coasts, Population, Health Issues.  A residential field trip also takes place on the Isle of Wight.
Year 13 – Hazards, World Cities and Contemporary conflicts and Challenges
IB students follow the IB Diploma programme for Geography
